Abstract

155,082. Paterson, T. W. Oct. 22, 1919. Vacuum apparatus.-A vacuum fuel-feed apparatus comprises an outer fixed container 1 open to the atmosphere, a fixed intermediate container 2 connected by a pipe 15 to suction, and an inner movable container 3, balanced by the weights 8 and provided with a valve 10, the stem 11 of which carries a valve controlling the admission of fuel to the container 2. When the fuel rises. in the container 2 and overflows into the container 3, the latter falls and opens the atmospheric valve 7, so as to break the vacuum, and at the same time opens the valve 10 and a diskvalve 6, and closes the inlet valve 11. The fuel then flows into the container 1, which is connected to the carburettor. When the containers 2, 3 are empty, the latter rises, thereby closing the valves 6, 7, 10, and opening the valve 11, and the cycle is repeated. The valve 6 carries a tube 13 which is depressed when the container 3 falls. A stand-pipe 18 may be mounted on the delivery pipe 17 to indicate the rate of feed. A valve under the pressure of the lubricating system, as described in Specification 142,049, [Class 122 (iv), Steam-engines, Regulating &c.], may be arranged in the pipe 15, so that, if the lubricating system fails, the valve cuts off the suction and the fuel supply to the engine stops.
