Abstract
172,355. Marks, E. C. R., (Veenschoten, V. V.). July 26, 1920. Stop-gear. - In apparatus controlled by variations in the pressure of a fluid, a valve is arranged to admit a second fluid when the pressure of the controlling-fluid falls by a predetermined amount. Fig. 1 shows the application to a boiler feed-pump, having a valve in the feed-pipe controlled by the level of the water in the boiler. The stop-valve 12 in the steam-pipe 11 is controlled by a cylinder 13, the upper end of which is connected by pipes 25, 19 to the boiler feed-pipe, while the lower end is connected by a pipe 21 with the steam-pipe. The pipes 25, 19 communicate by means of a casing 14, Fig. 2. A valve 22 in the casing is acted on on its upper surface by the pressure in the feed-pipe and by a spring 35 regulated by a screw sleeve 39. The lower surface of the valve is acted on by steam and a head of condensation water in a pipe 20 communicating with the boiler. In the event of a great fall in the pressure in the feed-pipe, the water and steam in the pipe 20 lift the valve 22 and pass by the pipe 25 to the cylinder 13, thus closing the stop valve 12. In order to re-start the pump, a stop valve 51 in the pipe 20 is closed. The pressure of the spring 35 may be so regulated that slight fall in the feedwater pressure is sufficient to open the valve 22.
