Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-In a closed feed supply system of the kind wherein water not required by the feed pump is returned to the feed tank and make-up water is passed through the main condenser before admission to the supply system, the valve or valves controlling the return or admission of water are operated by pressure under the control of a single float. A float F in a vessel in communication with the main condenser M controls the supply of pressure fluid to the cylinder C of a piston-operated valve P, which regulates the return of water from inlet side of the feed pump K to the feed tank N through pipes R, S, and the admission of water from the tank to the system through pipes S, T and the condenser. A needle valve D on the float lever so controls the escape of pressure fluid from the cylinder C through a port in the piston that the piston follows the movement of the needle valve. The pressure fluid may be feedwater taken from the system through a pipe E. The valve P may be held in its upper or lower position by a hand-operated spindle Q. In a modification, the return of water through the pipe R is controlled by a lift valve which is lifted, when the float rises, by a spindle on a piston-operated valve controlling the admission of water.
