Feedwater, controlling.- To maintain the water at a constant high level while the steam demand is normal and at a constant low level when the demand increases, the spindle 9 of a float 8x operating the feed valve 13 when the steam demand is normal carries a perforated or leaky piston 7, the upper side of which may be opened to the atmosphere through a passage 19 controlled by a valve 17, which opens when the steam demand increases and the boiler pressure falls, and allows the steam pressure, acting beneath the piston 7 to close the feed valve. The water level then falls until a second float 33 on a lever 31 brings a cam surface against the lower end of the spindle 30 of the valve 17, which controls the pressure above the piston 7 and consequently the operation of the feed valve. The valve 17 is pressed downwards against the upward pressure of the boiler 'steam, which is admitted to its lower end through a passage 20, by an adjustable spring 23. When the boiler pressure increases, the valve 17 closes and the water level rises again to the high level at which it is maintained by the float 8x.
