[Class 122 (iii)] In a steam-power installation for deep-boring operations, the valve-gear control and the feed-pump control are mounted on the boring table so that the supervisor can adjust the valve gear and shut off the boiler feed to increase the power to withdraw the rod, and can start the feed at the end of the withdrawal operation. The exhaust from the steam-engine 4 passes to a feed-water heater 13 and then to a blast pipe 15 in the boiler uptake. The feed-water pump 16 is provided with a shut-off valve 18, and the water after passing through the heater 13 passes to the boiler drum 6. Main steam is branched by a pipe 20 from the main pipe 10 through a valve 21 to the engine exhaust pipe 12. The levers 25, 26 of the shut-off valves 18, 21 are actuated by a lever 22 rotatable about the axis 23 of the lever 7 which controls the engine valve-gear 9 and to which it may be connected during the withdrawing of the rod. When the engine is stopped, the feed-water valve is opened and the byepass valve 21 is opened to supply steam at reduced pressure to produce the blast to accelerate combustion. When the rod is lowered the lever 7 is uncoupled from the lever 22. The transmission may be effected through servomotors operated by air, water, or pressure oil.
