Abstract

Safety-valves; valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-In apparatus for preventing the occurrence of dangerous pressures in water mains for supplying turbines or other hydraulic machinery, the main is connected to a cylinder E, Fig. 1, having a piston A acted on by a counterweight F, a spring, or a constant fluid pressure, and also to both ends of a cylinder C, in which is a piston K provided with a valve K' and a stem K<2> of lesser diameter than the valve. Should the pressure in the main exceed a predetermined value, the piston A is depressed and through a lever G opens a valve H so that water in the end C<2> of the cylinder C escapes through a pipe I. The piston K and valve K<1> are thereupon raised so that water escapes from the main through an outlet O. In order to ensure a slow return of the piston K, an adjustable needle valve M is provided in the pipe L connecting the ends of the cylinder C. In a modification, the piston A operates the valve H directly, and the latter is disposed in the piston K. Further, the slow return may be secured by small apertures h<1>, Fig. 3, in the wall of the valve H, co-operating with passages C<3>, C<4>.
