Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-A relief valve, reducing valve, surplus pressure valve, or make-up valve of the kind actuated by fluid pressure under the control of an auxiliary valve has the auxiliary valve actuated in both directions by adjustable tappets. In the form shown, the main valve a is coupled to a piston d subject to steam pressure admitted through a pipe under the control of a valve t and exhausted through a valve u. These valves are mounted on a common spindle connected to a piston actuated by hydraulic pressure from an overhead tank under the control of a valve k. This valve is moved by adjustable tappets m<1>, m<2> actuated by the main conduit pressure acting in a spring- loaded diaphragm. In a modification in which the main valve is actuated hydraulically, the valves t, u are replaced by two separately actuated valves, or a permanent leak and single drain valve may be used.
