Abstract

1,150,151. Rolling. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 14 June, 1966 [22 June, 1965; 13 Dec., 1965], Nos. 26261/65 and 52905/65. Heading B3M. Roll changing apparatus for use with a 4-high mill includes a rig 27, having two support platforms 31 and 32, which is vertically movable to align either of the platforms with a floor level 36. As shown, a working roll pair 20 has been shifted laterally from a mill frame 12, a replacement pair 20a being moved into the frame after raising the platforms by means of jack 35. The rig 27, together with a pair of backing rolls 15 and 16, are supported by spacers on the other, can be laterally moved to the right using a jack 38, Fig. 3. The roll pairs 20, 20a are provided with wheels 26 which co-operate with rails on the platforms, while the backing rolls are supported on a sled 37. The rig 27 is supported on stronger foundations, Fig. 4, when the backing rolls are to be supported, the upper platform 32 being removable for this purpose. The rolls are moved by a sled 37 on to the platform 31 by means of the hooked rod 53 of an hydraulic ram, and are lifted by a crane from the platform. Alternatively, wheels may be provided to permit the rolls to be moved on rails on to the platform and, after raising the platform, along floormounted rails. The rolls may be moved singly or in pairs.
