Abstract

1,273,016. Rolling mills. HITACHI Ltd. 30 Sept., 1969 [2 Oct., 1968], No. 48113/69. Heading B3M. Roll changing apparatus for a four-high mill incorporates a work-roll changing truck 19 which is movable in the direction of the roll axes, and a backing-roll changing truck 26 which normally supports the truck 19 and is movable in a direction transverse to the roll axes. The truck 19, Fig. 4, has two sets of rails for supporting work-roll assemblies 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> or spacers 45 associated with the backing-rolls. The truck 26 has sets of rails 29 and supports 27, 28 for supporting the truck 19 and backing- roll assemblies. To change the work rolls 4, 5, the rolls are first supported by vertically movable rails 14 in the mill stand, and are then drawn by a traction car 18 on to aligned rails on the truck 19. The truck is shifted laterally, by moving the truck 26, until a replacement set of rolls 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> is aligned with the rails 14. The new rolls are then inserted in the mill. If the backing-rolls 2, 3 are also to be changed, a spacer 45 is shifted from the truck 19 to a position between the rolls in the mill. The rolls 2, 3 are then supported by a sled 35 in the stand, and are movable on to the truck 26. In order to allow the rolls to be pulled on to the truck 26, the truck 19 has to be pulled from the truck 26 on to aligned rails beneath a cover 20. The cover has first to be raised by cylinder 42 to accommodate the truck 19. The truck 26 is shifted laterally until a replacement set of backing rolls 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> can be inserted in the stand.
