Abstract

A rolling mill includes a pair of removable inserts 31, 32 for each housing, the inserts incorporating cylinders 37 for balancing the chocks 17 and 19 of backing rolls 16 and 18, and further cylinders 38 and 42 for balancing work roll chocks 13 and 15. The cylinders 37 can alternatively be replaced by a single cylinder at the top of the mill. The chocks 13 for an upper work roll 12 are provided with wheel carrying legs 20, and with stops 21 for supporting the chocks 15, thus enabling the work roll assemblies to be removed as a unit from the mill on rails 43. The rails also serve to support a carriage for removing the inserts 31 and 32. To remove the work rolls, the cylinders 38 are collapsed and the cylinders 37 operated to lift the chocks 17, bolts 65 holding the chocks in a raised position. Wheels 46 carried by the chocks thereby lift the chocks 13 and hence the lower chocks 15, to a position in which the wheels 20a are aligned with the rails 43. Slots in the rails permit the vertical movement of the wheels 20a, while the wheels 46 serve to support the roll assembly while it is initially shifted axially on to the rails 43. The assembly can then readily be drawn clear of the mill using a carriage 70, Fig. 2. A pair of arms 76 on the carriage are movable laterally towards and away from each other to allow their engagement with similar arms 75 on the chock 13. When the work rolls have been removed, a carriage 50 is inserted within the housings, the wheels 46 and rails 43 supporting the carriage. A jack 55 on the carriage lifts platforms 57 into engagement with the inserts 31 and 32, thus raising the inserts. The lips 34 (Fig. 1) of the inserts disengage grooves 33 in the housings, further lips and grooves 62, 63 then supporting the inserts on the carriage. The carriage is then withdrawn from the mill using the carriage 70.
