1452645 Rolling mills BLAW-KNOX FOUNDRY & MILL MACHINERY Inc 11 Nov 1974 [4 Dec 1973] 48698/74 Heading B3M A roll stand in a continuous strip rolling mill has work rolls 18 and 20 which are spaced apart from each other during and after their removal from the stand, so that they do not interfere with strip being rolled in the mill. As the roll chocks are moved out of the stand, stools (which are initially located in cavities in the chocks on the operator side of the mill) are positioned between the chocks to keep them spaced apart. Before the work rolls are removed, the chocks 14 and 16, Fig. 2, are moved apart, the upper ones by raising rams 32 and the lower ones by lowering rams 44. The rams, which may be used for crown control of the work rolls, leave the chocks supported by rails 30 and 40. The rails, Fig. 4, extend between the housings of the stand and support the chocks as they are withdrawn from the stand. To maintain the chocks spaced apart as they move out of the stand, stools 70 and 90 are located within cavities in the operator side chocks 14 and 16. The stool 70 is drawn into cavities 80, 82 as the chocks are moved, whereas the stool 90 is picked up by cavities 100, 102 in the chocks 14<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>1</SP> on the drive side. Both sets of chocks are therefore maintained in a spaced condition as the rolls are moved clear of the stand. The rolls are pulled clear of the stand by a ram assembly (Fig. 6, not shown) and supported on a carriage 132, Fig. 8, by shifting the carriage laterally, a new set of rolls is aligned with the mill and can be inserted in the stand. Pivotally arranged floor plates 140, 142, 146, and 148 serve as support rails for the chocks when they are in their raised positions, the upper edges of the rails being alignable with the rails 40 within the stand.
