A rolling mill is provided with spacers for maintaining the work rolls of the mill in a spaced condition during a roll changing operation. The spacers are permanently incorporated in the mill and are automatically brought into operation during roll changing. Rods 40 extend vertically through the chocks 34 of a lower roll, the rods normally being supported as shown in Fig. 7 by upper flanges 43. When the two rolls are to be moved from the mill, the lower chocks are dropped until rollers 45 on the rods contact fixed rails 39 within the mill windows and the chocks rest on surfaces 42 of the rods, Fig. 8. The upper roll is then spaced from the lower one, and the two roll assemblies can be removed from the mill on the rails. The work rolls of a four-high mill can be changed in a similar manner but the rails in this case are vertically movable and are located adjacent the lower work roll chocks. In an alternative form of the rods, the rollers can be separate from the rods and provided on a trolley.
