A rolling mill comprises a pair of rolls in chocks 17, 22 and means 33 mounted independently of the chocks and acting jointly on the chocks tending to move them apart. Thus the rolls are held either against their back-up rolls 14, 16 or their screw-down mechanisms. The fluid-operated means 33 acts on a lever 34 mounted on the chock 17 and pivoted to a rod 38 bearing on the chock 22. Either the back-up rolls or the work-rolls may be driven and may be reversible. The bearings of the back-up rolls may be hydrodynamically lubricated. To remove the work rolls, beams 25 are raised to lift the back-up roll chocks 13 and 15. Rails 28 thereby contact rollers 30 enabling the workroll assembly to be run out of the mill. The fluid-operated means may be mounted on the upper back-up roll chock.
