Abstract

1,046,011. Rolling. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. July 17, 1963 [Aug. 3, 1962 (2)], Nos. 30071/62 and 30072/62. Heading B3M. A frameless rolling mill comprises at each side of the mill chocks 17 and 18 held together by hydraulically prestressed columns 23, the roll pass being adjustable by jacks 25 while the columns are in a prestressed condition. The columns 23 are each provided at their lower end with a piston 50, movable in a cylinder 46 which is urged against a lower chock 18, and with a nut 44 at their upper end urged against an upper chock 17. The chocks of work rolls 11 and 12 are urged apart by jacks 80. To adjust the roll pass, worms 71 (Fig. 2, not shown) are turned to rotate internally threaded cups 64 mounted in the lower chocks. Externally threaded sleeves 65 which bear against the upper chocks are then moved axially on projections 70 of the columns, the piston and cylinder assemblies taking up relative movement between the chocks 17 and 18. Co-operating pressure pads 54 and 55, 59 and 60, and 75 and 76 which have either part spherical, or cylindrical surfaces, defined by radii struck from points R1 and R2, allow rotation of the chocks about the points R1 and R2 to accommodate bending of the rolls under load. The lower chocks are provided with trunnions 40 supported on pedestals 42, and with guide portions 32 for the upper chocks. Pressure pads 75, in the form of load cells, may be used to automatically control the pressure in jacks 80 to keep it constant. The invention is applicable to two high mills, or mills with vertical rolls, and the upper chocks may be supported by the trunnions.
