Abstract

1,075,701. Rolling. HILLE ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1965 [March 6, 1964], No. 9576/64. Heading B3M. A rolling mill comprises two rolls 10, 12 mounted in chocks 14, 16, 18, 20, the pairs of chocks at each end being automatically moved bodily by half the amount by which one of each of the pairs of chocks may be adjusted to vary the roll gap. The mean height of the roll gap is thus maintained constant. The degree of play of roll chock housings 22, 26 in their guides 34 is adjusted by phosphor bronze pads bearing against stainless steel wear plates. The upper roll chocks 14, 16 are secured by screws 38 and plate springs 42. The chocks are adjusted axially by screws 90. The pass gap and height adjustments at each end of the rolls are effected by worm gear 66, 64 rotating a rod 50 having a screw-thread 52 engaging the lower chock support 44 and a screw-thread 56 of half the pitch and opposite hand engaging a nut 58 resting on the base 61 and supporting the housing 22. By releasing clamps 67 holding the nuts 59, the housings 22, 26 complete with rolls can be lifted clear. In a modification, a housing (22), Fig. 3 (not shown), is closed by a nut plate (71), the chocks being inserted from below, and the screw is made in two parts joined by a coupling (80). In a further modification, the chock (70), Fig. 4 (not shown), contains guides for the lower chock (76). The height of the pass line can, in all cases, be adjusted by rotating the nuts (54) or (58). In a four-high mill, the back-up rolls are adjusted.
