Abstract

1,090,411. Rolling mills. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. May 6, 1965 [May 13, 1964], No. 20009/64. Heading B3M. .A rolling mill 10 comprises reducing rolls 16, 17, Figs. 1, 2, mounted in chocks 22, and backup rolls 37, the latter being carried in yokes 41 urged towards each other by pistons 43. The upper chocks 22 are engaged by screws 23 rotated by motors 25 through worm and wheel drives, and each chock is prestressed by a fluid pressure piston 29. Upper rolls 37 are urged upwardly, Fig. 1, by a crossbar 45 connected to rods 46 associated with pistons or springs 47. A shelf 48, Fig. 2, supports a pair of wedges 49, 53, which are actuated by a screw 54 to adjust the bottom chocks 22. When the rolling mill has been prestressed by pistons 29 and 43, screws 23 are actuated to engage the upper chocks 22 and the pressure on pistons 29 is relieved. In a modification, each screw 23, Fig. 4, has a pair of-pistons 57. In a further modification, the rolls 59, 61, Fig. 5 are crowned to compensate for deflection.
