Abstract

1,248,927. Rolling mills. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 6 Aug., 1969 [9 Aug., 1968], No. 38054/68. Heading B3M. To help change the work rolls in a rolling mill the work roll clocks 14 and 15 are each provided with wheels 56 or 55 at their bases, the wheels being supported on beams 21 in the windows of the mill housings. The chocks nest one within the other, with the wheels carried on lateral extensions 51 and 53. The extensions are arranged such that when the wheels engage the beams 21, the upper work roll is held clear of the lower one. With the wheels in engagement with the beams, the rolls can be removed as a unit from the mill. In place of the fixed beams 21, which require the lower backing roll to be lowerable for allowing contact between the wheels and beams, movable beams (Fig. 2, not shown) may be provided. The movable beams are used in a mill having a fixed lower backing roll, the beams being raisable to bring them into contact with the wheels. The beams carry hydraulic pistons 36 and 37 which act between respective extensions 54 and 51 on the chocks 14 and 15 to urge the work rolls apart.
