Abstract

1,161,318. Rolling. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 16 Nov., 1966 [15 Nov., 1965], No. 48335/65. Heading B3M. A rolling mill includes screw-operated adjustable spacers acting between the chocks 14, 15 of backing rolls 16, 17, and mounted between the mill housings 12 and work roll chocks 25, 26. Each spacer includes a block 21 fixed relative to a housing 12 and supporting an internally threaded cylinder 36 and a meshing piston 32. The piston is prevented from rotation by keys 33 interacting with a fixed sleeve 31, but is slidable axially, to vary the spacing between the chocks 14, 15, by rotation of the cylinder 36. A shaft 41, driving a worm 40 and internally splined worm-wheel 38, rotates the cylinder 36. Removal of the work rolls is facilitated by means of wheels 44 carried by the chocks 26, and rails 45 fixed to the blocks 21, 22. Wheels 46 and 47 are similarly provided for the chocks 15, while projections 50 on the housings serve to support the chocks 14. Prestressing of the roll assemblies is effected by an hydraulic ram 43, while load cells 35 are disposed beneath the pistons 32 for control purposes. In an alternative arrangement, the spacers are slidable vertically relative to the housings and enclose screw-operated wedges which adjust the separation of the chocks 14, 16 by means of vertically slidable plungers with oblique inner ends.
