Abstract

A rolling mill stand of a 2- or 4-high mill comprises bearing chocks 15, 16 with spacer blocks 14 between the chocks, each block having adjustment means to vary its effective length to alter the roll gap and a foot 14A so that the stand is supported by the blocks. The chocks are held together by tie rods 33 which pass through the chocks and may pass through the blocks. The lower end of each tie rod has an hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 35, 36 to prestress the stand. The prestressing may be constant or vary with the rolling load. Between each chock and block is a roller or rollers 26 between bearing blocks 27, 28. The axes of the rollers lie in the same plane as the axes of the rolls in the chocks to allow pivoting of the chocks when the rolls bend under rolling load. Between the spacer blocks 14 and the bearing blocks 27 is a wedge 32 which is adjustable to alter the effective length of the spacer. The lower wedges may be used for coarse adjustment and the upper wedges for fine adjustment. The wedges of each spacer are interconnected to ensure the same adjustment to each one. The adjustment could be alternatively achieved by packers between the rollers and the blocks or screws. Load cells 38 may be provided between the chocks and spacer blocks to control the adjustment. A fixed cramp bar may be provided between the blocks 14 of the two ends of the stand. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), a 2-high rod mill has the chocks (15), (16) of the work rolls spaced by the spacer blocks (14). There may be only one adjustment wedge in each block to automatically give concentric adjustment. If only small changes of roll gap are required the prestressing bolts may be replaced by stiff springs. In a third embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the hydraulic cylinders are at the top of the stand and the lower end of the tie bars held by cotters (41). Each spacer block (14) carries a symmetrically operating screw-jack which engages the upper and lower chocks (15), (16). The four spacer blocks are coupled together by ties (50), (52) and each spacer block has a foot (53) secured to bed plates (55). The rolling stands enable easy roll changing without upsetting the adjusting means. Further the support blocks constitute mounting posts for coolant equipment and guides.
