981,277. Rolling. BRIGHTSIDE FOUNDRY & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., E. N. ALLBESON, and S. R. SKELTON. May 23, 1963 [May 24, 1962; Aug. 13, 1962], Nos. 20028/62 and 30945/62. Heading B3M. A rolling mill stand having at least two rolls, includes pairs of wedges disposed above and below pairs of lugs formed on the roll chocks supporting one of the rolls, so that, after the prestressing force is prestressed clamping members has been absorbed, the wedges can be moved to vary the distance apart of the rolls. In a three-high stand, Fig. 2, the rods 34 urge the chocks 20 and 22 of the upper and lower roll against the chock 18 of the middle roll. The tie rods are provided with clamping nuts 64 and 66 acting on a base 40 and an upper beam 68, and are surrounded by sleeves 78. Wedges 30 and 32 are positioned on each side of lugs 28 of the chocks 20 and 22. Before adjustment of the upper and lower rolls using the wedges the prestressing force on the rods 34 is absorbed by the sleeves 78 which are each compressed hydraulically by an annular piston 74. The pairs of wedges 30 and 32, which are tied at their ends by bars 42 and 44, Fig. 3, and axially moved by a worm driven screw 48, are then shifted to raise or lower the lugs 28 and house the rolls. Similarly, in a two-high stand, Fig. 5, upper chocks 112 which slide in lower chocks 106 are adjusted by wedges 118, the four wedge assemblies being simultaneously adjusted by an oppositely threaded shaft 136. The upper chock is balanced by adjustable spring-urged rods 170.
