Abstract

1,183,579. Rolling. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 25 Aug., 1967 [31 Aug., 1966], No. 38874/66. Heading B3M. A rolling mill includes hydrostatic bearings 109 for supporting part of the circumference of opposed rolls 106 the bearings opposing deflection of the rolls under load. Each bearing 109 includes hydrostatic pads 112 mounted in recessed blocks 110, the pads being supported in the blocks either hydrostatically, by a low friction material such as p.t.f.e., or by a pad of semi-resilient material. Wedges 110 or, if desired, screws or hydraulic cylinders, adjust the vertical positions of the bearings. In place of several bearings spaced along each roll barrel, a single bearing may be used with spaced vertical adjusters along its length. The adjusters can be used to control the roll shape or to provide automatic roll gap control. A two or four-high roll arrangement may be used. (For Figures see next page.)
