Abstract

1,240,659. Rolling. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 15 Nov., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967], No. 51225/70. Divided out of 1,240,658. Heading B3M. A rod rolling mill includes a stand having work rolls 20 and 21 mounted in arms 24 and 25, backing rolls 22 and 23 mounted so as to be alignable with the work rolls, and a prestressing actuator between the work rolls for urging them towards the backing rolls. The work rolls 20 and 21 may be carried in respective arms 24 and 25 which are pivoted at 26 to the mill frame 15. Alternatively, the upper arm 24 may be adjustable and the lower arm rest on an adjustable stop. The backing rolls 22 and 23 may either be supported in self-aligning bearings on pro jections 60 of the arms, or they maybe supported in the frame 15 in bearings which are adjustable by screws. The arms are pivoted to the frame by a pair of pivot pins which can be removed to permit withdrawal of the rolls. The roll gap may be kept constant by an actuator 51 in response to measurements from a thickness gauge and a load cell beneath the lower arm. The backing rolls may be arranged in a plane offset from that of the work rolls, in order to allow modulation of the roll gap. Two similar roll stands are arranged in a common frame 15, the stands being inclined at 45 degrees and being set at 90 degrees to one another.
