1286667 Rolling mills BLAW-KNOX CO 20 Oct 1969 [24 Oct 1968] 51440/69 Heading B3M At least one backing roll of a 4-high mill has a bending force applied to its extended ends in order to compensate for normal bending under load, the bending force being derived from the rolling load acting on the mill. In one form, Fig. 1, the necks of both backing rolls 22 and 24 have extended necks carrying respective bearings 66 and 66<SP>1</SP>. Each neck is engaged by a hook 56 pivoted to a rocker arm 50. The arm is carried within a tubular beam 40 and supports a movable rocker assembly 80 between itself and the beam. Rolling loads pass from the chocks 30 to aligned plates 44 and 72, and to a mill screw 74 via the rocker assembly 80 and the arm 50. Since the assembly 80 is offset from the plates and screw, a load is applied to the arm 50 tending to raise the hook 56 and bend the roll 22. The compensatory bending force automatically varies with the rolling load and can be used with a gauge control system to provide both gauge and crown control. The inner end of each arm 50 is held within the beam 40 by hydraulic pistons 52, 54. The pistons can be pressurized when an overload is sensed, the arms 50 thereby being pivoted in a sense to reduce the load. Alternatively the hooks 56 can be openable in response to an overload. Each assembly 80 can be moved horizontally by an hydraulic actuator 96 to vary the amount of bending force generated by a given rolling load. A similar arrangement is shown in Fig. 4; here the bending force applied to the roll ends is positive or negative according to the positions of the assemblies 80.
