Abstract
1,022,121. Rolling strip. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. May 16, 1963 [May 18, 1962; Aug. 7, 1962], Nos. 19225/62 and 30149/62. Heading B3M. Metal strip is rolled by passing it through a mill under tension and then through a second mill with a low tension so that little or no reduction takes place, the strip then being coiled under tension with any non-flatness of the strip removed. Bridle rolls 23 (Fig. 1, not shown) allow the strip to be coiled under tension without affecting the tension in the second mill 16. Tensiometers 25 measure the tension in appropriate regions and may be used in the control of the motors for the first mill 11, pinch roll units 15 and 16, and the rolls 23. The control may be automatic and include hydraulic piston and cylinder assemblies 19 which vary the pinch roll pressures. Conventional stands may replace the pinch roll units, the rolling being hot or cold, or alternatively, a planetary mill including a reducing roll co-operating with a fixed die may be incorporated. In an example low carbon strip of 40 inches x 0À016 inch section is rolled at 2000 f.p.m. and reduced only in the stand 11, the strip tension being 25,000 lbs./sq. inch leaving stand 11, 1,000 lbs./sq. inch leaving the unit 16, and 6,000 lbs./sq. inch between the rolls 23 and the coiler 24.
