Abstract

1,122,659. Rolling strip. FOX INDUSTRIES Inc. 2 Nov., 1965 [12 Nov., 1964], No. 46405/65. Heading B3M. A strip 23, Figs. 1 and 2, is rolled to a uniform thickness in a rolling mill by prestressing the mill housing 10 to an initial load so as to produce a preselected average strip thickness, measuring the thickness of the strip ahead of the work rolls, and varying the applied load. When the strip thickness varies, work roll chocks 17, 19 are supported in recesses in the back-up roll chocks 12, 13 and the prestress is provided by hydraulic cylinders 21, 22, placed between the back-up roll chocks. The strip is measured by an X-ray or beta-ray gauge head 24 which transmits a signal through an amplifier 25 to a servo valve 26 which controls the pressure in cylinders 21, 22. In a modification, the prestress cylinders (40), (41) are placed between the back-up roll chocks, Fig. 3 (not shown), and cylinders (43), (44) are placed between the top back-up roll and the housing, or the cylinders (40), (41) may be omitted. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), cylinders (47), (48) are placed between the backup rolls, and roll bend cylinders are provided. In another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), work roll chocks (50), (51) are held between shoulders (52), (53) on housing (55), prestress cylinders (56), (57) are mounted in the shoulders, and roll bending cylinders (59), (60) and (61), (62) are provided.
