Abstract

1488392 Rolling mills NIPPON STEEL CORP 8 Oct 1974 [8 Oct 1973] 43611/74 Heading B3M A rolling mill stand, Fig. 1, for rolling metal sections is provided with fluid pressure units 6 for varying the transverse stand stiffness. The vertical stiffness may also be adjusted by units 5, the stiffness adjustments being made by a controller 10 in response to the measured dimensions of a section being rolled. Any changes in the roll pass contour caused by the rolling forces can therefore be compensated for. The controller 10 may adjust the ratio of the transverse stiffness to the vertical stiffness. Several stands may be used in a tandem arrangement, Fig. 6, the stands 15, 18, and 19 having stiffness control units operated in response to sensors 7 which measure the workpiece dimensions. The stands may progressively reduce a rectangular billet to a section of L-shape.
