Abstract

1484166 Rolling mills BLAW-KNOX FOUNDRY & MILL MACHINERY Inc 11 Nov 1974 [4 Dec 1973] 48699/74 Heading B3M A rolling mill with work rolls carried in removable chocks 14 and 16, Fig. 2, has its housing windows extended inwardly at 31 to provide extensions 35, 37 and 39 which house balancing and crown-control pistons 36, 52 and 50 acting on ears 40 and 42 of the chocks. The pistons are shown in their retracted positions prior to a roll changing operation. Each extension 37 houses two sets of pistons 50 with a position transducer assembly 70, Fig. 4 located between them. The assembly includes telescopically arranged housing parts 74 carrying pins 76 and 78 which normally follow movement of the chock ears 40 and 42 to provide (via a transducer 72) a measure of the chock spacing. The pins are automatically disengaged from the ears when the chocks are moved apart for roll changing. The outputs from the two transducers in each housing are used to control the hydraulic force applied to a lower backing roll to provide workpiece gauge control. The housing parts 74 are biased apart by a spring or by a supply of gas or air under pressure.
