Abstract

1457917 Rolling mills HITACHI Ltd 14 May 1974 [16 May 1973] 21323/74 Heading B3M A four-high rolling mill has backing rolls 9, 9<SP>1</SP> which are movable axially to minimize the effects of bending forces acting on the work rolls 2, 2<SP>1</SP> when rolling workpieces 1 of different width. The rolls have shoulders 11, 12 which are approximately aligned with the edges of the workpiece 1. Cylinders 6, 6<SP>1</SP> between the ends of the work rolls allow bending of the rolls to help in producing a flat product. The backing rolls may either be moved axially together with beams 26, 27 located between the rolls and mill frame, or may be moved independently of the beams (Fig. 5, not shown). The roll bending forces applied to the cylinders 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, and the axial displacement of the backing rolls may be calculated by a computer in response to signals from sensors which indicate roll bending, roll displacement and the shape of the rolled product.
