Abstract

1279247 Rolling mills UNITED ENG & FOUNDRY CO 30 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968] 46238/68 Heading B3M A rolling mill or calender incorporates a deflectable beam positioned between a backing roll and the housing of the mill or calender, the beam being controllably deflected to bend the backing roll and hence a working roll associated with it. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, a cluster mill is provided with beams 63 associated with two outer backing rolls 48 and 49, each roll taking the form of casters 51 mounted on a shaft 52a. Each beam has threaded bosses 68, 69 which are movable towards or away from each other by a shaft 71 to bend the beam. The shaft 52a, and also the journals of the outer backing rolls 47 and 50, are eccentrically mounted so that rotation of respective gear 77 on the shaft ends leads to adjustment of the roll positions and of the roll gap. The four outer backing rolls 22-25 on the opposite side of the gap can be similarly adjusted. Crown control beams can also be provided for the rolls 47 and 50 and 22 to 25, if desired. The three intermediate backing rolls on each side of the gap are driven. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, one backing roll 87 of a four-high mill comprises castors mounted in a deflectable beam 90. The beam 90 is carried in a beam 91 similar to the beam 63 described. Bending of the beams 91 and 90, and also the working roll 84, is effected by a motor 99 through worm gearing. The pass of the mill is adjustable by conventional screwdowns acting in oppostie ends of the beam 91. The roll deflection apparatus is also applicable to 5-high or 6-high mills.
