Abstract
1288934 Rolling metals; continuous casting WEAN UNITED Inc 5 May 1970 [5 May 1969] 22853/69 Headings B3F and B3M A rolling mill stand, which may be associated with a continuous casting plant, is provided with a pair of cantilevered rolls 18, Fig. 2, each of which is driven by meshing gears 23 and 31 carried on the roll shaft and a driving shaft 29 respectively, the roll being carried in a frame 24 which can pivot about the axis of shaft 29. The two rolls can thus be pivoted towards and away from each other in the frames 24 while remaining in driving contact with the shafts 29. A common motor-driven spindle 33 drives wormwheels 32 associated with each shaft. The frames 24, Fig. 3, are urged towards each other at their roll-carrying ends by a cylinder assembly 54. The roll gap is adjusted by a wedge 46 located between the frames, the wedge being operated by a motor driven jack 49. The pressure exerted by the assembly 54 is greater than the rolling pressure normally encountered, but an excess pressure will merely cause the rolls to be safely forced away from one another. The mill stand can be employed in an assembly of four stands, Fig. 1, to roll metal issuing from a multi-strand continuous casting plant. The vertical rolls of the stands are driven by respective motors 15 arranged outside the paths of movement of the metal strands.
