Abstract

1311566 Rolling mills HOESCH AG 29 June 1970 [5 July 1969] 31341/70 Heading B3M A metal slab is rolled into strip in a mill having a roughing train (or a reversing stand) and a finishing train, the strip being subject to interstand tension in the finishing train and to interstand compression when being rolled from the slab. An intermediate rolling train can be combined with the finishing train. The arrangement of the mill is designed to reduce the heat loss from the work during rolling. In order to control the width of the strip, assemblies 12, Fig. 8, are located between the stands of the roughing train, the stands having edging rolls associated with them. Each assembly 12 includes a roller 804 over which the strip passes, and an upper cylinder 121 which creates a compressive force on the strip. The speed of the rolls in the second stand 102 is initially adjusted so that the volume of material passing through the stand 102 is less than that supplied to the previous stand 101. A temporary build-up of material occurs which urges the roller 124 upwardly. When the adjustable pressure in the cylinder 121 is exceeded, a switch is operated to lower the roll speed of stand 101 or to increase the roll gap, thereby producing equilibrium in the flow of material. Following the assemblies 12 are strip guides 13, Fig. 9, positioned either between the last stands of the roughing train or between the stands of an intermediate train. Each guide incorporates rollers 132 and 134 which prevent the strip from buckling. If the strip forces the rollers 134 upwardly against the pressure of cylinders 136, the drive to the train of rolls is automatically switched off. In the finishing train loop lifters are positioned between the roll stands to produce a tensile force in the strip. The combintaion of roll force together with either compressive or tensile forces in the strip, maintain the strip width uniform during rolling.
