Abstract

1281404 Rolling mills ASHLOW STEEL & ENG CO Ltd 27 July 1970 [1 May 1969] 22344/69 Heading B3M A rolling mill incorporates a pair of rolls 10 mounted on respective shafts 8, the shafts carrying gears 6 which mesh with further gears 7, Fig. 4. By driving one of the gears 7, the other gear 7 is driven and the two rolls are rotated. The gears 6 and rolls are carried in arms 4 which can pivot about the axes of gears 7, thereby allowing the roll gap to be adjusted while the gears remain in mesh. To adjust the roll gap, the arms 4 are pivoted by a shaft 24 carrying threaded sections of opposite hand. The sections co-operate with nuts on the arms 4 to pivot the arms about the axes of gears 7. A ram acts between the arms 4 to take up backlash during adjustment. Two such mills may be situated side by side, with one a mirror image of the other. A common motor drives the mills, and a common shaft 30 can be used to adjust the shafts 24 simultaneously. Exit and inlet guides (Fig. 1, not shown), and also cooling water sprays are provided for the rolls.
