Abstract

1351074 Rolling HITACHI Ltd 8 Feb 1972 [15 Feb 1971 4 Aug 1971] 5809/72 Heading B3M A rolling mill with work rolls 23, intermediate rolls 11, 12 and back-up rolls 25-28 has the intermediate rolls mounted for axial adjustment so that on alternate sides of the work rolls one end thereof is not supported over the zone outside the strip 1 width. The work rolls are bent by hydraulic rams 9, 10. The intermediate rolls are tapered 13, 14 at alternate ends and each is driven by an electric or fluid motor through shafts 15, 16. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4, there are only two back-up rolls 42, 43. The intermediate rolls of this embodiment are driven through shafts 70, 71 and universal joints 72-75 from a single electric or fluid motor through a pinion stand speed reduction device 76. The shafts 70, 71 are splined at their ends 77, 78 remote from the mill and axially moved by hydraulic piston-cylinder units 85, 86 or by a screw-nut device (104), (106), Fig. 6 (not shown) through a lever linkage (101), (103) actuated by an electric motor (107) with a belt drive (110). The work rolls may be cooled by sprays (134), (135), Fig. 7 (not shown), and the strip pressed between plates (130), (131). In operation the intermediate rolls are axially adjusted so that their tapered ends are positioned in alignment with the edges of the strip, Fig. 2. The parts of the work rolls which do not contact the strip at each side of the strip are not effected by the intermediate roll at one end of the roll to reduce undesired bending of the work rolls and uneven strip thickness.
