884,436. Universal joints. SIEMAG SIEGENER MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. Dec. 24, 1959 [Jan. 7, 1959], No. 43909/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXII] In a continuous rolling mill e.g. for rolling wire and fine iron, the stands 9, Fig. 3, are movable cross-wise to the rolling line so that guides may be substituted in their place between remaining stands, a driving connection being maintained during and after the movement by means of a longitudinally extendable and contractable shaft. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the gear housing 17, guides 10 and the stand 9 are attached together for lateral movement by a fluid cylinder 20. The guides 10 are also capable of independent adjustment by a screw-spindle 32, Fig. 5 (not shown). The extendable shaft comprises a spindle 24, Fig. 4, which co-operates at each end with internal splines of coupling sleeves 26a, 26b and 27a, 27b which are shrunk on the journals of the driving and driven shafting. In an alternative arrangement the shaft 24 may be located between the gear housing 17 and the stand 9. Roller runs and deflectors 11, 13, 15 are also provided between the groups of stands as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
