Abstract

812,764. Rolling. UNITED STEEL CO'S Ltd. Sept. 20, 1957 [June 22, 1956], No.19455/56. Class 83 (4). A ring-rolling mill with inner and outer vertical rolls has two rolls with conical faces disposed so that they control the vertical spread of the blank, the axes of all four rolls are in the same vertical plane and the conical rolls have bores surrounding the inner vertical roll with axes inclined to that of the inner roll. The inner and outer vertical rolls 1, 2 respectively form the curved faces of the blank 5, roll 2 being interchangeable to take rings of different lengths, conical rolls 3, 4 control the vertical spread and form the upper and lower faces and guide rollers such as 50 centralize the blank during rolling, being located in forked arm 51 fixed to shaft 52 carried by link 53. At the end of the rolling operation the blank completely fills the enclosed pass formed between the four rolls. The axis of roll 2 is fixed and as rolling proceeds the radial thickness of the blank is decreased by moving horizontally a right angular frame 43 carrying the rolls 1, 3 and 4. Frame 43 is turnable and vertically movable in guides 45, 46 and has a member 17 by which it is supported and guided on one side in a fixed housing 15. When the member 17 is clear of the housing the frame and roll 3 can be lifted from roll 1 by an hydraulic ram acting on the base of the tubular section 44 and turned aside to admit a blank 5. Rolls 1 and 2 are driven by motors (not shown) through a shaft 13 and a bevel wheel 23 respectively, roll 1 being keyed to a foot 18 in gear type universal coupling 19, 21 and engaged to a similar coupling 28, 29 through dog clutch 27. Two conical fash rolls 7, 8 are mounted on racks 35, 36 and are horizontally movable by motors 37, 38 in guides 33, 34 which are integral with vertical rams 9, 10.
