In the manufacture of shaped pieces from annularblanks,itisknowntousearollingmandrel provided with a groove, which rolls out the work from the edges of the central hole or inner walls of a blank radially outwards producing slanting sides. In this rolling process the matrix in which the ring is rolled is mounted insuch a manner that it can turn in a plane vertical to the axis of the rolling mandrel and can be moved nearer to the rolling mandrel in the same plane. As in all circumstances any seizure of the work by the mandrel must be avoided, the rolling surfaces must be disposed parallel or inclined to the axis of the rolling mandrel. With the use of the usual'rolling process it was impomble to roll lateral faces disposed at right angles to the axis of the rolling mandrel, for instance for ball bearings, rings, and in particular it was impossible to produce shouldered bearing rings having one deep side or, lateral surface even with the use of a rolling mandrel having flank surfaces at an obtuse angle to the axis of the rolling mandrel.
Now the subject of the present invention is a process for the manufacture of shaped pieces from annular blanks, wherein the work by means of a rotatable obliquely disposed-matrix is held in a position oblique to the axis of the rolling mandrel, and during the rolling process is gradually moved (together with the matrix which forms one lateral surface) towards and against a rolling mandrel in a direction oblique to the centre axis of the matrix, and preferably vertical to the axis of the rolling mandrel, which by an oblique sin-face forms the second lateral surface, whereby the lateral surfaces, and if necessary also some of the inner. surfaces of the work, are rolled vertically to its centre axis The apparatus used for carrying out the process has a lever member adapted to move vertically to the axis of the rolling mandrel, which lever member m n a bearing surface disposed obliquely to the axis of the rolling mandrel, in which bearing surface the matrix is rotatably moimted. The lever member serving as matrix support is preferably pivoted at one end about a pin disposed parallel to the axis of the rolling mandrel, and at its other end engages,- if necessary with the interposition of a rollerwith a cam controlling the travel of the matrix. To prevent displacement in the direction of the roller pressure the matrix is secured by retainingrings which, for the purpose of takingup- June 18, 1931 the side exposed to roller pressure, are provided with ball bearings, and are connected rigidly with the feed lever member.
In the process according to the invention the deeper lateral surface of the ring can be shaped 5 by the matrix, while the other smaller lateral surface is formed by the rolling mandrel. The oblique arrangement of the mandrel makes it possible to roll very high and also non-uniformly high lateral surfaces which stand exact-f 1y at right angles to the axis of the ring.
One form of construction of the device for carrying out the process according to the invention is given, by way of an example, in the drawings, wherein:--

The shouldered bearing outer ring shewn in the drawings is intended for a ball hearing such as is preferably used for mine wagons. The centre axis a of the ring i when being rolled stands at an angle tothe axis b of the rolling mandrel h whose flank surface situated obliquely to the axis rolls the lateral surface a vertically disposed to the centre axis a or parallel to the median plane d of the ball bearing ring. During the rolling process, the ring 1. rotates in the median plane d, but at the same time is raised in a plane e vertically disposed to the rolling mandrel axis 11 whereby the necessary feeding movement is obtained.
The roller device shewn in Figs. 2-4 consists of a rolling mandrel h and a lever member (1 holding the matrix. At one end n the leverq is pivoted about the pin 1', and the other end m, by means of a roller t, the height of which can be adjusted if necessary, engages with a cam l of a control shaft 8, and-thereby is raised gradually according to the desired feed of the material to be rolled. Whereas the ends m andn of the lever are at right angles to the axis of the rolling mandrel and at the same time form the lever guides, the middle part 1' is arranged obliquely to the axis of the rolling mandrel, 55

The middle part 1' of the lever contains two annular gripping jaws u and v on both lateral surfaces. The mandrel h is coupled to a working spindle c by means of a non-rotatable, but longitudinally movable sleeve H in which the roll mandrel cone B is secured by means of a compressive spring A mandrel h presses against the work i, and during rotation, by'its pressure takes with it the -work i and the matrix It rotating in the ball bearings. By means of the proces according to the invention it is also possible to work shouldered bearingringsofballbearingswithrolllngsurfaces partly vertical or substantially at right angles to the middle axis in a single operation; which was'not possible by the rolling methods hitherto used. Moreover, perfectly smooth running surfaces can'be obtained in a single operation without subsequent turning of the r and instead of the hitherto usual conical lateral surfaces, it is possible to obtain lateral surfaces vertical to the middle axis, as any seizing of the rolling mandrel is avoided in the proces according to the invention.

An apparatus for manufacturing ball races and the like, including a rolling mandrel and a cooperating rotating matrix acting as formers on a, hollow work-piece, means for driving the mandrel, a support for the matrix movable about an axis parallel to the axis of the mandrel, and means for moving the support, the plane of mandrel, a support for the matrix, a member in which the support is rotatably mounted, said member being adapted to swing about an axis parallel to the axis of the mandrel, and. means for swinging the member, the plane of rotation of the matrix and the working surfaces of the mandrel being at an angle to a plane other than right angles to the axis "of the mandrel.
