Abstract

776,227. Rolling wheels and discs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 31, 1955 [Sept. 1, 1954], No. 24996/55. Class 83 (4). In a method of rolling wheel discs 3, Fig. 1, such as are used in turbo-machines, pairs of radially disposed rolls 60 engage the discs on opposite faces and are moved towards each other to reduce the thickness and at least one pair is moved radially with respect to the blank according to a predetermined schedule. The rolls 60 and a second pair 61, Fig. 3, initially operate over the same region to form the web, but as the wheel increases in diameter the rolls 61 move radially outwards to form the web and a further pair of rolls 63 moves radially outwards to form the rim. The rolls are frustoconical in shape so that the velocities of the rolls and wheel discs are the same at any point of contact. A machine for rolling discs comprises a rotatably driven chuck 5 and three radially disposed beds 14 each of which carries one of the sets of rolls 60. The rolls are mounted in C-shaped frames 20 attached to housings 19 which are radially slidable on the beds 14 along guide-ways 16 under the action of pairs of cylinders or screw jacks 28. Pass adjustment of the rolls 60 is provided by wedges 48 which are slidable along guides 50 on the housings 19 and dovetail into wedges 54 which are vertically slidable in the frames 20 and carry bearings 58 for the rollers. Movement of the wedges 48 is obtained through rack- and-pinion mechanisms 44, 46 driven from cylinders or screw jacks 32 through a further rack-and-pinion mechanism 36, 40. The rolls 60 are driven through shafts 62 and universal couplings 64 from a motor 68 and gear-box 66. In a modification the rolls are mounted in bearings 42, Fig. 4, which are vertically slidable in the housings 20 under the action of eccentrics 84 and connecting rods 85. The eccentrics 84 are mounted on shafts 82 which are rotated by toggle and lever mechanisms 80 actuated from cylinder 32 attached to the housings 19.
