CONTINUOUS SMALL SECTION ROLLING MILL LINE Filed Oct; 25. 1965 United States Patent 3,383,896 CONTINUOUS SMALL SECTION ROLLING MILL LINE Franz Blinn, St. Ingbert (Saar), Germany, assignor to Verwaltungsgesellschaft Moeller & Neumann, Olfene Handelsgesellschaft, St. Ingbert (Saar), Germany Filed Oct. 23, 1965, Ser. No. 503,538 3 Claims. (Cl. 72226) ABSTRACT OF THE DESCLOSURE A continuous small section rolling mill line including first and second rolling lines, a multi-stand breakdown group in the first rolling line, a multi-stand intermediate group and a subsequent multi-stand finishing group in each of said first and second rolling lines and a preliminary intermediate group with horizontal stands in the first rolling line directly behind the breakdown group to permit two-core rolling straight through the breakdown group, the preliminary intermediate group and the intermediate group in the first rolling line.
The invention relates to a continuous small section rolling mill line comprising a breakdown or roughing group on a first rolling line, and on both the first rolling line and a second parallel rolling line an intermediate group and a subsequent finishing group. In view of the fact that in the case of a known rolling mill train of this type, the intermediate groups as well as the finishing groups are the same, one can move either in front of the intermediate groups or directly in front of the finishing groups from a two-core rolling operation to a single core rolling operation. In order to be able to make use of all the stands in the latter case, the intermediate groups are staggered relative to each other so that they may be operated in a series or successive arrangement. In this arrangement, it is necessary to move the rolled material from the second rolling line for the single core finishing rolling.
In view of the number of stands, one is able to move in the known rolling mill line to a single-core finishing rolling operation either after many, namely sixteen passes, or after eleven passes, wherein in each case four finishing passes are available for each core. However, one can also continue the rolling operation immediately after the six stand breakdown group of the known mill in nine single passes through each of the intermediate and finishing groups, so that in that case fifteen passes are possible for each core rolled. In view of the fact that the rolling program of a small section steel rolling line includes also fiat and profiled pieces which require the use of all the stands, one encounters difliculties in the known rolling mill line in that with an extensive two core rolling operation one is able to carry out only four finishing passes each, while in the other case with nine single-core passes each only the six stands of the breakdown group are available for the two-core rolling operation. Presuming that all the stands must be used, one has thus only the choice between sixteen or six two-core passes or four or nine single passes per core. As a two-core rolling operation does not permit very accurate rolling action one finds that in the case where only four finishing passes are available the rolling material cannot always be brought to the desired size.
In the other case the rolling material is still insufficiently formed after only six two-core preliminary passes to be then moved already over to the second rolling line, except in a case where one works with smaller first pass cross-sections for the breakdown group, which means a loss of production.
It is an object of the invention to provide a continuous "ice small section rolling mill line on which one may roll with maximum billet cross-sections also flat and profiled pieces substantially in a two-core operation until the rolling material is ready to be moved over, but where still more than four, preferably eight single passes are still possible. According to the invention, this is obtained in that for the two-core rolling operation there are arranged behind the breakdown group on the first rolling line a third or preliminary intermediate group with horizontal stands behind which the first rolling line is'branched while the finishing-groups may be operated from the first rolling line in a single core manner in a parallel operation. With the additional third or preliminary intermedite group, which in the preferred embodiment has only four horizontal stands, together with the six stand'breakdown group one arrives at, for example, in the case of flat pieces ten two-core passes after which only eight individual passes need follow. This means that while maintaining the finishing groups of four stands each, the two intermediate groups located behind the first branch of the rolling lines also need have only four stands each. One obtains thus in the case of eight individual passes through the intermediate and finishing groups a total of eighteen passes during rolling of fiat and profiled pieces. In other words, with only two additional stands with respect to the known rolling mill train one obtains instead of only six, ten two core passes, and instead of the nine individual passes which would not be necessary at all, one has eight individual passes. By means of the two additional stands one obtains thus in the new rolling mill line arrangement the surprising effect that the total number of possible passes increases from fifteen to eighteen.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from reading the specific description of the invention in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the specification and which illustrates, by way of an example only,an embodiment of the invention.
The single figure of the drawing shows the embodiment of a rolling mill line according to the invention having a twenty-six stand small section steel line. The stands 1 to 6 represent the multi-stand breakdown group, stands 11 to 14 and 11a to 14a the known multi-stand intermediate groups and stands 15 to 18 or 15a to 18athe known multi-stand finishing groups, in front of the finishing groups a first deviation 21 is provided which in contrast to the known line leads from the first rolling line I to the second rolling line II and not conversely. -It is essential that the deviation 21 has the same direction as the second deviation 22 located in front of the two intermediate groups 11 to 14 or 11a to 14a in order to be able to carry out a rolling operation of round material straight through to stand 14 first two-core and then single core.
According to the invention the breakdown groups 1 to 6 are followed by a third or preliminary intermediate groups 7 to 10 having four horizontal stands so that the intermediate groups 11 to 14 and 11a to 14a need have, in contrast with the known line, only four stands each. In view of the rolling of flat material, the two first stands 11 and 11a of the intermediate groups should be vertical stands for edge rolling of the flat material. It is appropriate to make stand 11 on rolling line I a so-called combined horizontal-vertical stand which may be selectively arranged in either the horizontal or vertical rolling position. One needs at this point a horizontal stand when round material is to be rolled two-core up to stand 14.
What is claimed is: x
1. A continuous small section rolling mill including first and second rolling lines, a multi-stand breakdown group for two-core rolling in said first rolling line, a multistand intermediate group and a subsequent multi-stand finishing group in each of said first and second rolling lines, a multi-stand preliminary intermediate group having horizontal stands for two-core rolling in said first rolling line behind said breakdown group, a first deviation in front of the finishing group in said first rolling line leading to the finishing group of said second rolling line and a second deviation behind said preliminary intermediate group in said first rolling line leading to the intermediate group in said second rolling line to thereby selectively provide two-core rolling on said first rolling line straight through the breakdown group and intermediate groups in said first rolling line or single-core rolling in both said first and second rolling lines behind said preliminary intermediate group.
2. A continuous small section rolling mill in accordance with claim 1 wherein the first stand in the intermediate group in said first rolling line comprises a combined horizontal-ver1ical stand having rolls arranged to be operated selectively in either a horizontal or vertical position and wherein the first stand of the intermediate group in the second rolling line comprises a veitical stand.
