Abstract
1,194,852. Straightening. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 2 Feb., 1968 [2 Feb., 1967], No. 5089/67. Heading B3E. A roller straightening machine for elongate metallic structural members has a plurality of rotatable driven shafts arranged parallel to each other in a housing, each shaft carrying a pair of straightening tools each of which has a surface adapted to engage a distinct portion of a member to be straightened, to apply a force thereto sufficient to contribute to the straightening thereof and at least one of the shafts having power means associated with one of the tools thereon to axially adjust the position of the tool relative to the shaft. The machine has a number of upper shafts and a number of lower shafts in staggered arrangement, each shaft 23 carrying a pair of rollers 21, 22 and being supported in bearings 25, 26. The roller 22 is fixed directly on the shaft and the roller 21 rotates with the shaft because it is keyed to a sleeve 37 which is itself keyed to the shaft and which telescopes over the end of the shaft and is secured to one end of a rod 38 which passes through a central bore 41 through the shaft. The other end of the rod is attached to the piston 42 of a double acting hydraulic cylinder 44 which is mounted on the end of, and rotates with, the shaft 23. Opposite ends of the cylinder receive pressure fluid through pipes 45, 48 and a rotating joint 46. The piston moves the roller 21 so that the width between the rollers is such that each of the rollers engages a flange and the central web of an I-section beam which is to be straightened. An extension of the rod 38 passes through the rotating joint 46 and is connected to the lever arm 52 of a potentiometer 53. The potentiometer controls an indicator which shows the width to which the rollers 21 and 22 are set.
