Abstract
1,226,856. Power-tongs. BYRON JACKSON Inc. 6 Sept., 1968 [17 Oct., 1967], No. 42574/68. Heading B3N. A power tong assembly comprises a pipegripping head 1, Figs. 2, 3a, 3b, in which a gear 11 is mounted to be driven in either direction through gearing, at a high speed and low torque, by a fluid pressure motor M1, or at a low speed and high torque by simultaneous operation of fluid-pressure motors M1 M2. Ring 11 has a cam path 18, 19, Fig. 4, which co-operate with rollers 44 carried by spring-urged jaws 40 slidably mounted in an inner ring assembly 20, Fig. 3a, so that rotation of gear 11 about assembly 20 will cause radial movement of jaws 40. Brake means 51, 52 are provided for applying a drag to assembly 20. After operating on the pipe or rod, the jaws are released by reversing the direction of rotation of the gear 11, so that rollers 44 move on to the regions 18 of the cam path. However, in order to prevent further relative rotation between gear 11 and assembly 20, and consequent further gripping of the jaws, an angularly adjustable ring 63, secured to gear 11, Fig. 6, locks the gear to assembly 20 by rollers 72, 75, and floating wedges 74. Motor M2, Fig. 3b, drives a ring gear 90 through a double-acting, self-energizing, over running clutch C, and a brake drum 104 is provided which assists the clutching operation. The valves V1, V2, Fig. 12, for controlling the supply of fluid to motors M1, M2 are controlled by levers 135 which actuate linkages 133, 134, through a rocker shaft located in a hollow shaft 122.
