Abstract
1,237,690. Roll-forging machines. BRIGHTSIDE FOUNDRY & ENG. CO. Ltd. 16 Dec., 1968 [18 Dec., 1967; 17 Aug., 1968], Nos. 57417/67 and 39456/68. Heading B3M. A roll-forging machine comprises a frame 11 and a roll carrier 12 mounted on a sleeve 28 carried by an eccentric 24 on a drive shaft 20, the sleeve 28 having a pinion 27 which cooperates with a ring gear 26 such that a roll 31 mounted on the carrier moves in a non- circular path. In the preferred embodiment the teeth ratio of the pinion to the ring gear is 5 to 6 so that the locus of the roll 31 is an hexagon with curved vertices, Fig. 4 (not shown). A pair of carriers having co-operating rolls may be used to roll sheet or, as shown in Fig. 3, four carriers comprising two perpendicular pairs operated interdigitally may be used. The rollgap may be adjusted by moving the carriers toward and away from each other by means of two eccentric rings 65, 66 mounted one within the other and rotated by cylinders 67, Fig. 10, or other suitable means, such as screw-downs or wedges. Alternatively the gear ring may be rotated by means of a lever which alters the angle at the flattened part of the roll locus, e.g. one of the sides of the hexagonal locus of the preferred embodiment, so that the roll engages the work at a greater or lesser angle thus giving a greater or lesser reduction, Figs. 8A, 8B (not shown). A means of altering both the roll locus and the separation of the roll carriers, Fig. 12, has the ring gear secured to a plate 82 pivoted on the frame 11 and the ring gear surrounded by an eccentric ring 85 on which a worm gear 86 is mounted. The worm gear is driven by a worm 87 so that as the carrier is moved away from the roll gap the ring gear is also rotated by a fixed pivot 83 attached to the plate 82. When two pairs of roll carriers are used all may be adjustable or only one of each pair. The roll carriers are driven from a common drive shaft through universal joints where the roll carriers are moved bodily, Figs. 9 and 11 (not shown).
