[Also in Division B3] In a rolling mill, signals related to the force between the rolls, the roll pass setting, and the bending force applied to prevent bowing of the rolls, are utilised to maintain a constant distance between the rolls. In Figs. 1, hydraulic thrusters 23, 26 apply forces through links 21, 24 to extensions of backup rolls 15, 16 of a rolling mill so as to counter the bending moments imposed on the rolls by material being rolled. Roll gap setting is by screws 28 having fine adjustment by hydraulic thrusters 30 operating worms 31. In Fig. 2, transducers 41, 28, 27 responsive to the hydraulic pressure applied to thrusters 23, the position of screws 28, and the stress in the mill, respectively, produce electrical signals which are combined in appropriate proportions and senses to produce a signal representative of material thickness which is compared with a signal representing desired thickness set by a potentiometer 62. Any difference operates a hydraulic valve 66 to correct the thickness by controlling hydraulic screw-down motors 30. With a switch 72 in the position shown, an appropriate combination of signals from transducers 41 and 27 operates a hydraulic valve 37 to maintain correct compensation of bending moment by controlling thrusters 23 and 26. With switch 72 in its other position, compensation may be controlled manually by operating a potentiometer 74.
