Abstract

1450958 Rolling mills NIPPON KOKAN KK 24 Oct 1973 [9 May 1973] 49468/73 Heading B3M [Also in Division G3] A method of shape control for a tandem rolling mill comprises adjusting the roll bending force or the rolling load (gap) for at least one stand in response to a measurement of the shape of rolled material leaving the final stand. "Shape" refers to buckling along the edge or centre of the strip (Fig. 1, not shown) and is detected either optically, by variations in tension detected as changes in permeability, or by variations in thickness detected pneumatically, in all cases at several points across the width; details of these devices are not disclosed. As shown, the shape is measured at 8, the signal being differentiated at 9 and 10 if the variations exceed a dead band. 11, 12 are integrators and 13, 14 P.I.D. controllers whose outputs are limited at 15, 16 and control roll bending actuators 17, 18. This embodiment is for correcting shape at the edges and/or middle of the strip and adjustment is made at the final two stands. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) correction of middle shape is effected in a similar way, but by adjusting the roll force (gap) of the two stands which precede the last one; this is to prevent interaction with the conventional gauge control system, which is provided, in all cases. In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the system of Fig. 6 is applied to the penultimate stand only. The invention is discussed mathematically and graphs of results are given.
