Abstract

1,101,346. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. 18 May, 1965 [4 June, 1964], No. 23286/64. Heading B3M. A rolling mill comprises a housing 12, a pair of back-up rolls 16, 17, a pair of work rolls 14, 15, chocks 19 on the back-up rolls, and opposed pistons 38, 39 which engage feet 30 on bearing brackets 29, which support rolls 16, 17. Bending moments are imposed on rolls 16, 17 when the pistons are separated by fluid pressure, and. the crown contour of the rolls is controlled. The pistons are carried in cylinders 31, and the cylinders at the drive side, i.e. the left-hand end of Fig. 1, are fixed, and the cylinders at the operating side, i.e. the right-hand end of Fig. 1, can be pivoted in brackets 34 to allow removal of the rolls. The pivoting cylinders 31 have springs 42 which urge pistons 39 inwardly to facilitate pivoting, and the pivoting may be effected by piston and cylinder assemblies.
