Abstract

A rolling mill comprises a pair of working rolls and a pair of back-up rolls carried by a saddle mounted for reciprocation in the mill housing, means being provided for increasing the distance between thrust members, which transmit the rolling pressure between the rolls and the housing, and the rolls, so that removal of the rolls and the thrust members as a unit from the saddle to a position alongside the mill is possible. The mill is of the type described in Specification 867,832 in which tubes or rods are reduced by rolls 15, 16, which are mounted in a saddle 11 reciprocated by 29, and are rotated by engagement of pinions on the rolls with fixed racks on the frame, the workpieces being fed into the rolls and the rolls performing a working operation when moving in one direction only. The mill frame comprises side members 42 having windows 43, a base 45, and a cap 50, while the saddle includes side members 66 and 67 tied together by beams 94 and rods 95, Fig. 4, the chocks of the working rolls and back-up rolls being retained in the s'de members by plates 74. The back-up rolls 20 and 21 are supported by thrust plates 22 and 23 and by movable wedges 24 and 25, which, when in the working position shown, cause the working rolls to be held together. Through the chocks 70, 71, 75 and 76 extend rods 82 and surrounding each rod is a spring 78 urging the chocks 70 and 71 apart. For roll changing, the housing cap 50 and the saddle 11 are raised slightly, the chocks are freed from the saddle, rails are slid under the roll assembly, and a conveyer shifts the assembly transversely of the mill frame. Wedges 83 are removed so that the rolls 15 and 16 are no longer urged apart by the springs 78, and jaw lifting bars 120 are moved from their rest positions to a vertical position, Fig. 4, and are attached by pins to the saddle 11. The cap 50, which is held by arms 53 pivoted at 52 to frame members 42 and is acted upon by hydraulically operated pistons 54 to prestress the frame, is released by swinging the arms sideways after releasing the hydraulic pressure in cylinders 55, and is then raised by hydraulic cylinders 59, the saddle also being raised. Wedges 130 are put between the chocks 70 and 71 for alignment purposes and wedges 132<SP>1</SP> are inserted in seats 133 in the rods 82, the lower back-up roll 76 thus being supported, as shown in Fig. 6. With the saddle raised rails 99 are inserted under the chocks and the roll assembly is removed from the saddle, the rails 99 being attached to a motor-driven chain. A new roll assembly can be inserted in a similar manner.
