Abstract

1,218,572. Rolling. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 9 May, 1968 [10 May, 1967], No. 21792/67. Heading B3M. [Also in Division B5] A rolling mill for metals or plastics includes an hydraulic unit for maintaining constant the spacing between a pair of work rolls, the adjustment being made by a servo mechanism responsive to the roll spacing. A unit is positioned between each upper backing roll chock and a screw-down 18, and comprisesa piston 17 which slides relative to a cylinder 16. Annular seals 24 and 25 allow the piston to tilt slightly relative to the cylinder. An hydraulic transducer 51 measures the piston-cylinder spacing, and hence the work roll spacing, and sends a signal to an amplifier 32 and servo valve 30. The valve controls the flow of fluidto chambers 22 and 23 defined by the piston, in order to maintain a desired work rollspacing. The transducer may be replaced by an electrical one having a movable core anda fixed stator. Coarse adjustment of the roll spacing- is effected. by the screwdowns 18.
