[Also in Division G3] The stressing force in a pre-stressed rolling mill stand is varied by an actuator so that the sum of the rolling force and stressing force is kept constant, the actuator comparing the sum of the forces, as measured, with a preset value and making appropriate corrections. The frames 6 of a rolling mill are pre-stressed hydraulically by piston 4 acting between the chucks 1 of the mill, a device 5 measuring the pressure. During rolling the sum of rolling and pre-stressing pressures is kept constant by a controller 14. The value of total rolling pressure from device 5 is fed via a line 15 to the controller, compared with a pre-set value, and any difference in values is transferred into a movement of a piston 13 to alter the prestressing and make the values agree. The piston 13 by its movement either increases or partially exhausts the pressure in a pressure multiplier 8, the change in pressure being conducted to the pistons 4 to vary the roll pass. Figure 2 shows a measuring device having a number of concentric cylinders 21-25 which are put in either compression or tension and which determines the spring coefficient of the device.
