Abstract

A rolling mill incorporates a roll-gap adjusting rod 16 which bears on an upper roll chock 13 and is formed at its upper end with an integral piston 22, movement of the rod being restricted by an axially adjustable sleeve 26. A spring 34 is located between the piston and sleeve and permits limited movement of the rod, subject to the spring compressibility. The sleeve is moved axially by a worm and pinion mechanism 29 to adjust the roll-gap, and is subject only to the difference between the hydraulic load on the piston and the rolling load. The spring allows, for example, 0À080 inch adjustment of the rollÀgap and can withstand a load of 200,000 lbs. A control circuit for providing automatic gap control, maintains the pressure applied to the piston at a value of P(Y+1) where P is the rolling load and Y is the ratio of the moduli of the spring 34, and of the mill, including the housing 11. Values of the rolling load from a load cell 17, of the mill modulus, spring modulus, and roll and strip width characteristics are fed to the circuit by potentiometers, the output of the circuit controlling the pressure value P(Y+1). The shape of the rod 16, and the disposition of the spring 34 can be changed, Figs. 3-5 (not shown). The rod 16 may be positioned at the base of the housing 11, and may be associated with two-high or four-high mills.
