Abstract

930,907. Rolling. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE. Nov. 2, 1959 [Jan. 3, 1959 ; Jan. 23, 1959], No. 37078/59. Class 83 (4). In guiding strips of a considerable length in rolling mills the adjustments on either side of the mill are corrected simultaneously and automatically by an amount larger than that necessary to precisely overcome the mill spring. Over-compensation is provided by reducing the stiffness of a spring 13, Fig. 4, included in an adjustment system similar to that disclosed in Specification 930,906. It is stated that synchronous automatic adjustment of the screws 15 cancels the excess compensation so that the strip remains centrally located and is also maintained at constant thickness. Instead of automatically adjusting the screws 15, the over-compensation may be cancelled by modifying the position of the switch constant piece 3 using plungers 16 working in opposition to springs 17, Fig. 5, or directly attached to and in opposition with the plungers 14, Figs. 7 and 8, and subjected to the means of the pressures in the jacks on either side of the mill or merely to the value of the pressure in the jack on the other side of the mill respectively. In the case of the arrangement of Figs. 7, 8, the value α-# may assume a predetermined value corresponding to a precise compensation of mill spring, while the value of α+# is such as to ensure stability of strip positioning, a and # denoting the cross-sectional areas of the plungers, e.g. 14 and 16 respectively.
