Abstract

A strip rolling mill includes an adjustable roll having a flexible roll sleeve which is selectively supported in some regions while being allowed to flex in other regions. A strip 10 is uncoiled at 11 (Fig. 2, not shown), rolled between vertical flexible work rolls 18 and 19, and coiled at 24, driven rollers 14-17 tensioning the strip. The supporting rolls 22 and 23 are each supplied with a flexible sleeve 82 (Fig. 4, not shown) surrounding a bush 81 of non-uniform thickness keyed to a journal 66. A developed view of a bush (Fig. 6, not shown) shows depressions 81<SP>1</SP>, the bush being rotatable by a worm gear 86 relative to the sleeve 82 in order to align a portion of the bush of appropriate profile with one of the working rolls, so that strips of varying thickness across its width can be rolled to a uniform thickness. The movement of the bush 81 can be controlled automatically to give strip thickness control. The rolls 22 and 23 each have their ends mounted in plates 46 and 47 in integral eccentric bushes 69 and 70, each bush being rotatable relative to the roll journal 66 by a worm-wheel 74 and pinion 73, for coarse adjustment of pass, and by an hydraulic cylinder 78, for fine adjustment. The roll sleeve 82 itself is driven from a shaft 98 through gears 83 and 84. The roll is lubricated and cooled by oil passing upwards through a central bore, radially outwards, and then downwards between the sleeve 82 and bush 81. The entry supporting rolls 20 and 21 are similarly constructed but have a rigid outer sleeve and have the central roll portion disposed eccentrically of the roll journal. The rolls 18-28 are all mounted in a housing having walls 39, 40, 45 and 46, the housing being vertically movable by jacks 90 in a supporting structure 32. The structure comprises uprights 32 and 33 mounted on beams 30 and 31. The working rolls 18 and 19, whose position is determined by the supporting rolls, are slidable by journals 45a in slots 45b. The rolls 22 and 23 can, if desired, be used as working rolls, and the pairs of rolls 20, 21 and 22, 23 are actuated simultaneously by the pinions.
